• Seat panel pattern stitching
Cheers, thought that might be the case with some templates.Mine were made before I thought about stitch lenght issues.Might need to have a meaure up off my templates.
  • Continuing Education
Nothing is available in the uk apart from a few upholstery shops offering courses that seem aimed at the hobby person. We tried to get an apprentice but as there are no formal accredited course then funding is not available to help train a young person.
  • Show off your latest custom upholstery work.
I've been cutting close to the stitch, gluing the seam and laying that down, letting it dry then leaving a 5mm or so gap where theres no glue before fixing the rest down.I'm trying to get a skiving machine to work properly to reduce the ridge even more.
I'm still trying to work out how to get the seams nice and straight though.
  • UK german box weave carpet
If you're after porsche stuff then southbound does it.
  • Thread of what
I used to be a mechanic at a mazda dealership, we once had a customer come back with a brand new car that had a bulge in the rear of the back of the drivers seat.I took the back apart to find a pair of hog ring pliers that had been left in at the factory..........wish I had kept them now instead of giving them to the service manager.
  • Material clamps
googling cloth clamps works for me.The ones pictured are under adjustable cloth clamps.
  • Material clamps
Looks like suisei is a manufacturer of sewing machine parts and accessories.
  • Material clamps
I googled suisei cloth clamps and came up with a llink which I posted here but was deleted.Maybe try that. The link will take you to a variation of the bulldog clips above but specialy for cloth.I think they may be what you're after.
No connection to the link myself.
  • Pfaff 1245 problem
I've had to grind and alter some chinese feet.
  • Top stitching
I use the same ones. The thing is you'll find all sorts of uses for them once you have them, the 1/4 inch ones I'll use if I need to sew two parallel lines on a door card or seat panel(3/16 for porsche), I make some tool bags and the 3/16 is useful for a stitch even to the outside edge of the panel.
  • Listing material
    We call it calico tube.
  • porsche 911 door capping
Brilliant Josh. The top unscrews, with the capping covered in leather its a bit tighter to get back on but a pair of circlip pliers helped.
  • Glue pot
I already use a bas type pot(got lucky on ebay and picked 4 or 5 up for £8 each) good on bigger stuff but I've been doing fiddly stuff the last few days and thought it could be useful with the smaller acid brushes.Might take a punt on one after all they're only a tenner on ebay.
  • Steaming Leather
On instagram I saw a russian(?) trimmer using a steam iron on a leather dashboard.
  • Having trouble with my machine
Johann is right, my machine used to do the same until I understood to do this.I've now got a needle postioner servo fitted to the machine so when I stop sewing the needle automatically stops in the slightly up position so I can knee lift the foot, turn the material then carry on sewing without it skipping a stitch.
  • Wrapping items.
    Cheers guys.
Cechaflo has great videos but I have to skip through them as they take up far too much time and I don't have enough concentration to watch them fully.
Heres a couple I've done recently, have another set to do soon in chocolate brown leather with a reddish brown stitch.

  • What’s the most profitable work?
I'm in the southwest of england, we never get snowmobile seats................then again we never get snow.
  • Vintage/classic Vs Modern
Not a lot gets done in a couple of weeks, we have a morgan thats buried in the corner, its been there for a least 7 years! One of our guys is pretty much on camper stuff all the time, the younger guy does a lot of seat repairs, carpet sets and general stuff, I get a lot of stuff that need a bit of thinking about and is here for a bit longer(I only work 3 1/2 days a week).
This is a tool pocket for a rally car, I normally make them 3 or 4 at a time.

  • Vintage/classic Vs Modern
In the uk and we do everything.
Four of us working various hours.Do loads of camper van stuff for 3 or 4 different convertors, seat repairs, classic and vintage, do some stuff for a lotus specialist(carpet sets, headliners, interiors, etc), stuff for a ford rally specialist, lots of porsche and tvr stuff. We make up lots of stuff for other people to sell on, ie the lotus and rally stuff. We will do boat and motorcycle stuff but not so often.
At the moment we are so busy and have been for the last 6 years at least (when I started).I've got some leather door panels, handles and pockets, bit of seat repair work, and a carpet set on a porsche, another porsche for a full interior and another box of porsche bits to cover, that'll keep me busy for a week or two.
  • Request - tuck and roll
I sometimes do the old school cotton stuffed pleats.Very time consuming.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXb47bz8LWM
Recently did some with the leather glued to foam, cut into strips, then sewn back together.First time I've done it this way but it worked well and was a lot quicker.
  • Mark-all pencils/ chalk??? What do you use
For vinyl and leather I've found liquid chalk window markers that are white, I'm not sure I'd trust them on visible areas but non vsible they are great.the best thing is I got them for 4 for £1.
  • How much material
    private message sent Chris.
  • How much material
Jens, when you say cut off is that material that is unusable?
I've had leather supplied for porsche from a uk supplier and found it not very nice, its been hard and coated with something that makes it impossible to mark,ie with pen, pencil, chalk.I also used a hide from another supplier which was similar, not a cheap hide either.
  • Top stitching feet?
I've got all six and I can find uses for all of them.At the moment I making tool pockets the 3/16 makes a nice seam around the edges, for french seams I mainly use the 1/8, if I'm running twin lines on a face panel the 1/4 is a good subsitute for a twin needle machine.
The number is the distance between needle and edge, although an 1/8 should give you a 1/4 french seam its a bit bigger, maybe 3/8.
