  • Why are so many shops offline?
A friend of mine went to his high school reunion a while back, had a great time, hooked up with some people he hadn't seen in years and the whole deal. Everyone said you gotta get on facebook so we can keep in touch, which he did. After 6 months he told me " Now I remember why I stopped talking to those idiots and he is no longer on Facebook. LOL! I guess I'm old school but word of mouth is the best and cheapest forum of advertising
  • Small shop layout ideas
Hey guys, and here I thought I was all alone, LOL, Your shop is awesome! I looked all around my area for a shop to rent when I decided to go on my own and came to the conclusion I'd be working to pay rent and hydro when I already had a small garage at home. Size is relative, the more space, the more junk( even though your gonna use it, honest ! LOL), One thing I picked up is a Baker scaffold, which is just a heavy duty rolling shelf, I made some removable shelves, so I have 3 levels, and the whole thing is on wheels, I push it to one side of the garage, and when I need something from behind it, it is easy enough to roll out of the way. Right now it is full of motorcycle seats in need of recovering, and my pressure washer but as soon as the temperature warms up I'll be filling it up with whatever, and I can easily take everything off and use it as a proper scaffold for those never ending chores around the house. Back in the day I worked at a trucking company loading trailers, and I still can hear my foreman saying "Maximum use of the cube boys, maximum use of the cube" translates well !

  • Why is the auto upholstery industry so mysterious?
I think you really have to look at how the upholstery industry has changed as a whole over the years. When I was a kid working for Pops, There was half a dozen shops in a 200,000 population city, each shop with 6 to 8 employees, that was in the 80's, as a 16 year old all I did was pickup and deliver cars to used and new car lots, Even in the late 90's and early 2000's I worked for one of the last multiple employee shops in the same but now 400 000 pop. city and we would work on 3 to 4 dealership cars a day. By the time I left in 2010 to go on my own we would get 1 or 2 a week. To the point of the question one of the local colleges had a evening course , you brought in an old footstool and recovered it once a week over an 8 week course and presto your an upholsterer! I guess that's mysterious? Over the years the guys that were 10 ,15 years older than me, as the industry changed and the money wasn't as good as it was, started there own little shops specializing in Boats Hotrods or whatever. but they were 1 or 2 person shops. you certainly couldn't count on the dealerships to support multiple employees like before . consequencely dealerships still have multiple mechanics and bodyshops have multiple employees .That gravy train has long since left the station. In my area there is lots of work for an upholsterer but you better be diversified, you certainly can't hang your hat on one part of the industry
  • Motorcycle seats -- what do yours look like underneath?
I've recovered hundreds of motorcycle seats over the years, and with the exception of the few, where the customer has specified they wanted a under liner applied I do not cover my staples or rivets and have not had a single complaint. Keep the staples running in the same direction and uniform, trim excess material.
When I do have to hide staples, black Deck Master is what I like to use. It doesn't fray when cut and glues real nice
  • Katzkin leather
I acquired about 8-10 complete sets of Suburban and Yukon cloth covers and traded some of them with one of my suppliers. When I asked him if he needed more he told me he still had everyone and was having a hard time getting rid of them. A sign of the times I guess
