  • Skiving seams.
So your saying skive at about 8mm to allow for 4mm on each side of the fold and give enough room for a top stitch or 2mm skive, 1mm each side and top stitch only one layer of leather.I can see what you mean by an even skive, I just see what the eastern europeans on instagram can do and try to get closer to it, they seem to run their skiving machines at a really slow speed and get such a neat even cut.I need to have a play and a bit more adjustment though.

  • Foam wrinkle
    What did you do?
  • what is landau foam ????
No help with the foam question but I've found white liquid chalk pens mark black stuff great.I did get a load from the range at £1 for 4.
  • Convertible tops
I'm doing a 1990 bentley, once you finished chris's limo can you pop round and finish mine.
  • Head Rest Post
Don't know about honda in particular but I prefer to remove the post, if I can't then I have fitted the cover found the post, cut a small hole and feed around the post although those do look a bit big for that.
  • Skiving seams.
Well I had a bit of a play today as I had to get on with the dashboards and came to the same conclusions as Lee but I hammered the seam down before top stitching. However when I did the dashboards I didn't bother skiving as the way the seam sits the extra thickness isn't visible.I'll post a pic when I've finished. I do have other stuff coming up that I will need to skive the edges on though.
  • Servo motors?
We changed all our machines at work a couple of years back.Fantastic and well worth doing. Not noticed a loss of power.Jack servo motor not sure if 3/4 hp or 1 hp.Went for needle positioner, I've set mine up so the needle stops just on the way up, tap of the heal and needle rises, great for stoping and turning on corners.Other machines set to stop with needle up which I don't like as much.Tapping my foot I can do one stitch at a time.I did extend the length of the motor arm and the foot pedal arm for a bit of extra control.
  • stuffed cotton pleates.
I just fold over the end of the stuffing, wrap some thin plastic over it and use a long ruler to feed it down the channel.A T shaped piece of soft top window helps guide the cotton into the channel.
  • Adler Vs Juki
Don't know much about adler but I'm sure the feet are cheaper and more plentiful for a juki.
  • 1/8 inch long staples. Where to buy
    Smallest we use are 4mm which google tells me is 3/16.Also use 6mm = 1/4 and 10mm = 3/8.
  • Pattern notcher
I just use pigs ear notchers, the springs on them do break but you can still use them.Won't work well on fabrics but work well on leather and vinyl. Also useful for notching material when going around corners, piping etc.Mine get used pretty much every day.
  • Rigid & flexible listing wires
We use the above listing, ours has a round section plastic while some of the vw range use a square section so it will fit into clips molded into the foam.I'm in the uk but I'm not sure which supplier we get it from.

Roll bar for a porsche, owner wanted black leather with blue stitch. Most complex bar I've done and only my third.Templated each joint in vinyl, only a single line stitch around perimeter of cover, initialy held in position with tied elastic and temporary stitchs.hand lacing cover took 6 hours, total job time 12 hours.tl3ah68m3w796j7d.jpg

I only use if I've got sew foam going over the top.
  • Taking on/ finding employees (UK)
All I can report is an employee.
I started about 7 years ago, I'm trained as a mechanic but wanted a change so I went to the trimmers(my now boss) said I can't sew but I can take stuff apart and I'm willing and able to learn.7 years on and I'm still there so I must have been ok.
We're in the same situation with workload but have taken other people on though still have far to much to do.
One was a furniture upholsterer who did a bit of subcontract work that joined us.
One was a co worker of the bosses wife (at the co op) who was also training as a mechanic.
The newest is a friend of the above, no previous experience but is doing seat repairs, cleaning up, fitting cushion covers, etc.
Had several others try the job but didn't have any flair for it and went on to other things.

Sorry, don't know where the fabric came from, would most likely be from the uk,maybe the netherlands or germany. Its a tweed type fabric and expensive, quality seems good.

  • Corners
Might also be down to fitting and how the seam allowance is folded.Might need one edge of the seam allowance trimming down a bit.Possibly cut the sew foam off the seam allowance.
  • Steaming Leather
Great video John, its not the one I'd seen on instagram...........the one you've posted is far better.
  • todays quote on email
After todays email we asked him if there was some mistake as we had heard that the car was being transported to another trimmers and was being trimmed elsewhere.
  • todays quote on email
Ha, ha. We also had that email.
    Scam.
  • Average amount of hours it should be taking
Headliners, I did a ford escort headliner the other day with a liner I had previously made(I make 5 at a time for another company) it took me under two hours to fit, in the afternoon I did a porsche 911, 6 hours inc making it from a template.
  • Average amount of hours it should be taking
One day to do front and rear seats is really moving unless its fitting a kit.I can do a pair of front vw t5 seats in about 16 hours (from what I remember) this is using templates I already have.It would include stitched design centres(diamond/pleats/etc), top stitched seams, headrests with top stitch and hand laced mounting slot, four armrests with top stitch, all in leather and foamed up.Full interiors tend to be around the hundred hour mark.
  • Glue pot
    I thought I'd update this.
I bought one of the smaller sized pots and use with a small(1/4 inch) brush. It work really well that I don't often use my oil can type anymore, great for small amounts of glue, I use it for headliners, smaller wrapping jobs and many other work.
The problems with the oil can type is the brush goes hard so needs to be kept in a pot of thinners so needs to be cleaned before use, brush goes hard and gummy when being used if left for a short while, also drips quite a bit. The pot type you can use pop the top on and off as you need. Also I found it blocks up quite easy.
Problems with the pot type are, don't fill too much as heat will push the glue out of the neck.Brush goes gummy but can be wiped off easily. If the glue gets a bit thick top it up and it will thin out, if not its fairly easy to pull the solid glue out and start again.
For the price of the pot type its certainly worth having.
  • Technique help sewing a half circle
No idea on the sewing the insert question but I would find it odd having the seam allowance on the left of the foot.
