Has anyone else experienced receiving vinyls that were rolled to tightly and when unrolled, have lines tattooed across the roll? I have tried heat, steam, and stretching to try to get them out. They are permanently creased into the vinyl. It happens with softer vinyls like soft side, and allante. I have talked with the suppliers to no avail. Next time I will ask to reverse roll, and see what happens. Any ideas on how to deal with this problem?

Here at Pyramid Trim Products we do run into that problem. It happens at the end of the roll. We call those marks 'end of the roll marks'. From your post it appears you have tried various methods to get the marks out of the vinyl. I am sorry to tell you Jim, that sometimes those marks will never come out. It is more likely that when the goods were manufactured is when the marks were made into the vinyl. Depending on how long the roll is in storage before it is sold for installation can allow a lot of time for those marks to form permanently into the goods. You may be able to iron out the marks with a clothes iron, we have had some success with that. But again, it does not always work. Another possibility would be to ask the supplier to wrap paper around the cardboard tube before rolling the goods onto the tube. Basically have a buffer between the material and the tube. Anything that keeps the end of the vinyl from touching itself will help. Otherwise call the supplier, explain the situation and ask for replacement.

I've experienced that too. It's very frustrating. I try to cut my patterns to avoid those lines but it really sucks to have so much wasted material.

We have returned many many yards of material for this and have never been charged a penny extra. However we have missed the lines before and completed a project before we noticed them, super frustrating then because nobody ever offers to pay for the lost time.

I am very fortunate to have Pyramid Trim in my back yard. I have done business with them for over 35 years and I can honestly say that they will do everything within their power to correct any problem that comes up.

I have spent hours trying to find the exact material for the restoration work that I do and Jeff, Peter and Ken treat me right. They also treat everyone else right. That is why I trust Pyramid Trim to deliver the best product that they can.

When it comes to the end of the roll, vinyl will develop creases and they are almost impossible to remove. Steaming the vinyl from the back side to remove or lift the lines will work most of the time. The steam will reach under the surface without hurting the vinyl. Flaws are also found in first quality goods all the time and it takes a sharp eye to catch them before they leave the supplier. Working around flaws in vinyl is no different than working with real leather. It is all part of what we do.

Maybe the suppliers could wrap another fabric or protective plastic with the first couple yards.

I find creases in premade headliners. why cant headliners be rolled up and stored in a cardboard tube?

First let me say, Pyramid Trim is a fine supplier. Nice people, good prices, very knowledgeable, and fast service. They are one of my favorite suppliers. I have no complaints with them. With that being said, I am not talking about end of roll marks. I am just saying that the surface area on the softer vinyls being manufactured today is so soft, that it takes very little for it to imprint permanently. I won't even order a vinyl on a Friday, knowing that it's going to be rolled up till Monday. And yes Jeff is correct, a buffer zone between the end of the material and the tube would help, because THAT is what causes the marks.

I agree with master Fred Mattson, those flaws also come on some leather hides which were not rolled on a tube properly. There are some upholstery suppliers who like to fold over vinyls or leather hides. That is a terrible mistake. The worst is they say do not worry, just put it under the sunrays and they would disappear. That will not happen because those creases would remain forever giving an awful look to our projects.

Here in Australia we take this as part and parcel of what we do so when ordering fabric we work on a percentage waste system.
I know that sounds bad but its hard when your supplier is 500 to 1000 kilometers away and delivery time is anything upto a week.
We habe just learned to suck it up.
And order as if your ordering oldschool hides blemishes and all.

Wow your nearest supplier is 500 kilometers away? That really sucks. Are there not many upholstery suppliers in Australia?

Maybe 10 depending on type of material some dont have every thing so supplies for one job could come from upto 5 sources then freight stings to.
Recently cost me $25 to ship 8mtrs of material and a 3day wait.
