  • Rural Upholstery Shops?
Definitely trucking companies (and drivers who own their own trucks), movie theaters, gyms, restaurants (especially diners), busses, school auditoriums, doctor's offices, etc.

When we first started out, we printed hundreds of flyers and went to every and any place that may require upholstery repair, handed them out and introduced ourselves. We also placed business cards on cars, trucks, etc that looked like they needed repair.

It took a lot of time, but definitely helped get the word out.
  • My Shop
Haha, that's what I keep telling him!
  • Business software
Agree with Fred, QuickBooks is the most versatile software I've seen around for this type of application.

If you really want to understand the ins and outs of the program, most community colleges offer night courses on how to use QuickBooks.

  • Why are so many shops offline?
Never seen fish tanks in a shop before. I bet it helps calm stress!
  • Why are so many shops offline?
Nice website Jack! It has a simple, clean and professional look to it.

I believe trimmers should think of their websites and social media accounts as extensions of their brick and mortar shops. After all, most first impressions these days are made online.

If your website looks professional, people will take the next step of giving you a call or bringing their cars in for estimates. If your website looks shabby, they'll probably move on to the next guy.
  • Battery acid
    LOL. Yeah, only God knows...
  • Marine vinyl
That's correct, good marine vinyl comes treated with chemicals that prevent bacteria and mildew, and provides ultimate UV protection.
  • Where to find...
You can buy it from Albright's Supply. Speak with @Torrie Coffman, she can hook you up.
  • Ok how many aussies on here
Not sure how many aussies have joined yet. But I have to admit, I've never seen an aussie trimmer's work that I didn't like. You guys have a hard time getting materials and supplies, but your craftsmanship is second to none!

    Nice write!

Buy a Bosch 1575A Foam Rubber Cutter where you can. Earlier this year a rep told us the tool has been discontinued...
  • Catching dishonest shops red handed (Or not...)
I have been in business for a long time and I strive to always give true and accurate estimates that are within pennies of the final bill. If an unforeseen expense comes up, as they occasionally do, I will call the customer and explain to them what I found and exactly what the added cost will be before I proceed with their project. This will eliminate any dispute with the customer when they come to settle the bill. After all, honesty IS the best policy. — Fred Mattson

    Amen to that!

A signed service order is basically a contract. If a customer agrees to pay a certain amount and then refuses to do so after the job is complete, you don't have to release the vehicle. Call the police, file a complaint and then sue.

Obviously, it's probably not worth it to go to these lengths for little jobs. But definitely for the big ones.

You can strengthen your position by having a very detailed service order -- including (1) full payment is required for release of the vehicle and (2) daily storage costs for anyone who does not pick up their car or pay in full after a job is complete.

There are a lot of jerks out there looking to take advantage of hardworking independent shops. Don't let them get the best of you.

"The ones who want it yesterday are always the ones who when you call to tell them it is done, say I will try and pick it up in a week or two."

Haha, ain't that the truth! :D

The way I see it, not all customers are worth the headache. The ones who start off as pains in the ass, will stay that way throughout the entire process. Unless you're willing to put up with it, tell them to go somewhere else.
