Hey guys. One area i dont have much experience in is pricing boat carpet removal and installation. What do you all charge on average to replace boat carpet (assuming you have to supply everything). Need to put an estimate together for a customer but don't wanna price myself out of the job, but don't wanna stick my foot in my mouth either. Just wanna know what the average price shops charge and roughly how many labor hours i should expect to see if im estimating this correctly. Thanks in advance

Wish I could help. I’ve done carpet in houses and it is no fun. For the boat, some things to consider size of boat, does it have wood that is possibly bad underneath, is it just the floor or some sides as well.
You could do a flat rate of $xx/yard and estimate how much material you will need. Might not be as applicable to a boat where you will need to upholster doors but that is how most floor installers price their jobs.

How I deal with pricing. It sound greedy but I'm far from that. Get what you can because unless you've done a few its probably gonna take you longer than you think. Be up front with the customer if you haven't done one and tell them your hourly rate you go by and that you have no idea how long it would take. Then be honest with your pricing and time. It's usually a guesstimate not an estimate. Also if you want happy return customers dont go over 20% more than you guessed. Plus tell them there maybe unforseen issues. And Always do your best work on every job. Even if you're gonna lose money. For every happy customer you'll get 10 more jobs. A 5 star rating on Google will pay the bills and the some.

I have done several and it takes time. I get three days labor at least to remove, prep and recover. This is for a 17-18ft Lund as they get bigger the labor amount goes up. I used to think that I could pull it all out in a day, recover it the next bam boom. It never works out that way.

Takes anywhere between 20-30 hours. Usually for measuring I take bow to Steven and double the amount of carpet to order. Don’t forget you will be ripping apart all the wiring for everything so take pics as you go.

We usually charge $1500 to 1800 and rarely make much profit. More of a service really, and an opportunity to sell some upholstery.

i agree with the 5 star statement. I thrive on my reviews and i have an excellent 4.9 star review record. I always try to put out my best work on every job because i understand word of mouth advertisement. But at the same time, i dont wanna stick my foot in my mouth and not price it enough and lose my ass on it. I didnt know if you guys had developed a formula to pricing a carpet job that i could use as a reference for pricing

No set price on boats. Live wells, dashes covers and compartments plus seats and pedestals all take extra time. Plus the condition of the floor once you remove the old carpet. Boats are carpeted and than assembled. Some are riveted some are screwed. The foam is done after assembly and you can't even get at some of the fasteners. The foam acts like a glue. So time and materials is the only way to be fair to yourself and the customer.
