I have 2 upholstery openings at my shop outside of Charlotte, NC, Sonderwerks, and can't find anyone. I've been using Indeed to both post the job and search resumes, but either no one is looking for an auto trimmer job, or I'm searching in the wrong place. I've been on Facebook in the various groups, posted on Instagram, still no luck. There's huge demand for the work, so it could be a great career for someone.
Solid comp, benefits, 401K, a great shop in a great part of the country, working on high end cars. I'm even offering help with relocation.
I'm sure others are finding the same problem. Any sugestions?
If folks know of a talented upholsterer/trimmer, please send them my way. daveatsonderwerksdotcom
Thank you, If you've seen my work through the company website most is not mine, however I have posted on some of the facebook upholstery groups.
Looks a great place to work, unfortunately I'm too long in the tooth for relocating such a distance.
With regards to your intial question it seems that you are advertising in the most suitable places, things have moved on since the times of job searching was looking in the local newspapers situations vacant column. Is there the possibility of training a school leaver up?
Sounds like every other shop trying to hire right now, no one is working or wanting to work since the pandemic hit. Most jobs can be done at home which i think is keeping people at home sitting on their computer.
Also when employees see that you are charging 100$++ an hour, they think that is going straight into your pocket without the thought of overhead and everything else in between, when they see that, they also will just open a shop of their own..
I would reach out to Wyotech. The students come out with a good foundation. Yes they will need more training but it's an option. Unfortunately good trimmers are hard to find. Average ones dime a dozen. We dont seem to float around like paint and body guys.
Its tough I have tried Indeed, Facebook and reached out to Wyotech. I have a small shop in Iowa with a lot of work & I am by myself. I have been looking for someone to come in wanting to be in the business, learn and in a few years take over when I retire. No luck at all for a couple years now.
ive been trading for 27 years and over that period ive employed 9 different people that all have experience !!!!!!!!!!! not many lasted long , one guy had more years under his belt , more tools than me and he lasted 3 weeks !!!!!!!! his work was shocking . not that many young guys getting in to but at least in the states you are doing these custom courses but nothing in the uk like that so it will only be self taught guys n gals
I am an instructor at WyoTech and can tell you that I can't train them fast enough. The students with talent have jobs before they graduate and we have several larger shops that come to our career fairs to recruit. We will be adding another 10 seats to our class size by this fall or winter however. Good luck!
It’s hard to find workers. I do mostly mobile vinyl and leather repair, and small reupholstery jobs. I go pick up the seats or seat covers from the customers, and then bring them home, sew them, take them back a couple days later. I’ve recently recruited my aunt to help sew. And I’m training a 16yo kid to help me. Hope he’ll work out for the summer. I’ve been working 12-14 hours a day since January. Need some help to get to more regular working hours.
Charles,
I'm definitely in the market for trimmers/custom trimmer. My dad was on the advisery council for Wyotech several years back, our shop is Sachse Rod Shop. I've sent emails to Wyotech in the past, but with no response.
If any grads are coming up and interested, have them contact us,

We have a shop in Wichita, KS and are looking as well, it's pretty much a constant search as the business keeps growing and we are only limited by how much our guys can do in a day. Finding good help is really hard, we've tried for years. Currently hiring in Wichita KS! 316-522-2828
My husband and I have owned and operated an auto upholstery business for 25 years, in southern Indiana. We are now considering relocating and finding a shop for him to work at where he can just do the sewing/fabricating and not have to deal with the business management/customers. I've worked the customer service /accounting/ scheduling/ etc parts of the business. Would really be interested to see any shops out there that would be interested in seeing any of our work for a possible job offer. Not sure what area of the country we prefer, so we are open to anywhere, planning on getting our place here sold before winter and loading up and heading out, If anyone would like to talk, email upholsterybarnatjunodotcom . Most of our work is classic cars, we've even built 2 of our own from the ground up, hubby has welding fabrication experience classic mechanical experience , just wanting somewhere else than Indiana . Plenty of pics to send.
