We used a Hoffman steamer installing Katzkin. I think the trick is to have some type of insulation on the wand. There was some type of small radiator hose on ours. I think the burning comes from direct contact between the metal and the leather/foam. We also used heat lamps. Or the sun in the summer.

Maybe the suppliers could wrap another fabric or protective plastic with the first couple yards.
